161 Gender Representation Within Editorial Leadership Roles of United Kingdom Surgical journals

Abstract Introduction Women remain under-represented in surgery the United Kingdom. Representation on journal editorial boards is a key metric of gender representation within academic surgery. Aim To quantify leadership journals affiliated with Kingdom surgical specialties. Method A list specialties was obtained from Royal College Surgeons England. web search for specialty associations conducted. Each association webpage then searched an journal. Once identified, editor-in-chief and other positions including associate, section deputy editors collected. Gender classification completed by first name recognition verified using institution provided. Managing without clinical background were excluded. Results 9 identified following specialties: General Surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic, Urology, Paediatric Ear Nose Throat, Oral Maxillofacial, Plastic Reconstructive Surgery. There no associated vascular society. total 195 identified. 164 occupied males (84%), 31 females (16%). female editor-in-chiefs. The average proportion per also 16%. One did not have any representation. Conclusions are this trend translates to roles journals. If initiatives designed promote parity be effective sustained, should scrutinise their own imbalances seek rectify them.
